10 days until summer!

Rebecca Talley grew up in Santa Barbara, CA. She attended, and graduated from, BYU where she met and married her sweetheart, Del. They are the parents of ten wildly-creative, multi-talented children. Rebecca now lives in rural CO with her family, a dog, numerous cats, a herd of goats, and a spoiled horse. When she isn’t writing, Rebecca enjoys dating her husband, playing with her kids, swimming in the ocean, and dancing to disco music while she cleans the house.

LDSWBR: If you had an entire day to read (on the beach, at the lake, by the pool, etc.), what book(s) or genre would you reach for first?

REBECCA: A clean romance. I love to get lost in a fun romance especially on a summer day.

LDSWBR: What book(s) do you look forward to reading the most this summer?

REBECCA: That’s a very hard question–there are so many books and so little time! I want to finish Paranormalcy and The Hero with a Thousand Faces. I also want to read Gregg Luke’s new novel due out in August.

LDSWBR: How would you describe the perfect summer day?

REBECCA: A perfect summer day to me is sitting on the beach watching my kids play in the waves and making sand castles. I love the smell of the sea water and suntan lotion and feeling the sun bathe me in warmth while listening to my kids laughing and splashing in the water. And to top it off, eating taquitos with guacamole followed by chewing green apple bubble gum.

LDSWBR: Thank you, Rebecca!

The Upside of Down by Rebecca Talley (Bonneville/Cedar Fort; January 2011) is available for purchase from Amazon.

Have you been to the beach? If so, do you have a favorite beach you love to visit?

The Upside of Down

Author: Rebecca Talley

Paperback: 256 pages

Publisher: Cedar Fort, Inc. (January 8, 2011)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 1599554542

“Hmmm,” the doctor muttered.

Natalie wrinkled her forehead, almost afraid to ask, and said, “What does that mean?”

“You do know you’re pregnant, right?”

Her breath caught in her throat. “Excuse me?”

“You’re pregnant.”

Her heartbeat thundered in her ears. “I’m what?”

Natalie Drake certainly has her hands full raising a large family, dealing with her difficult mother, and maintaining a relationship with her rebellious teenager. Just when things seem to be going smoothly, she finds out another unexpected surprise—she’s going to have a baby. Faced with so many challenges, Natalie must learn to trust in a plan that isn’t what she imagined and discover that every situation has an upside.

I read a lot during the course of the year. I also read a wide variety of genres of books. Every once in awhile you come across a book that truly touches your heart. This kind of book stays with you for a long time. The Upside of Down by Rebecca Talley is just that kind of book. I read this novel several months ago and I still remember how I felt as I read the story of Natalie and her family.

In this novel you get to know the Drake family who have six children and lead a very busy life. Natalie, a stay at home Mom and with a new calling as a Relief Society President, she thinks she can’t take anymore. Mixed in with the crazy everyday things that happen in a family, Rebcecca has included a lot humor. I laughed so many times while reading this book. Some of the things that I found humorous were when she came home and walked into her bedroom and it resembled the aftermath of a tornado. Natalie asks herself, Did she live with humans or pigs? I have felt that way myself. Another example, while sitting in Sacrament Meeting waiting to be sustained as the new Relief Society President, her daughter Laura reaches over and jiggles the back of her arm and says, “You do have Relief Society Arms.” There are so many other things that I could tell you that happen to Natalie, but I don’t want to spoil the fun for you when you read the book. I will say my favorite thing to happen involves Nair. I could not stop laughing!

Along with the humor there are incidences that make you angry and sad. It starts with chapter one when Natalie is with her two youngest at a fast food restaurant. A young family in front of her has a daughter that she notices has Down Syndrome. The father, in front of all the patrons, verbally abuses his daughter calling her a retard. That just made my skin crawl. I also had little patience with Natalie’s mother who continually criticizes her and her choices. Here is one example, “You have more than your fair share to handle here. I’m certainly not going to add to it. One of these days, I hope you wise up.”

To wrap it up, I feel personally that this is the best book that Rebecca Talley has written. She writes Natalie so real and so beautiful. She has one of the hardest challenges of her life when she finds out she is pregnant again. Then she finds out how truly special this child is that is coming into her life. She has to lean on her Heavenly Father, with much prayer, to help her through. Her family also grows closer together as they get ready to welcome this new little angel into their lives. The cover of the book shows so beautifully the heart of this story. I smile every time I look at it. I highly recommend this book to all of the readers that come to this blog; LDS or other denominations.

I interviewed Rebecca Talley, and she so brilliantly answered the questions posed to her.

1. What prompted you to write this book?
I thought it would be fun to write an LDS version of “Cheaper by the Dozen.” Since my 10 kids are constantly doing things like clogging the toilet, calling 911, or giving each other haircuts, I thought I could write what I know. :) Of course, the book is fictionalized but much of it is based on actual experiences in my family.

2. Was this book easier or harder to write than your others?
This book was a bit harder than my other books because it has so much of my heart in it. I recalled some painful real-life experiences to help give the story realism and it was difficult at times to relive them. In fact, I had to stop a few times and step away from it because my memories were too intense.

3. Did you have any input on the cover of your book? It is so beautiful!
I love the cover–makes me want to have a snuggly newborn every time I look at it. I can’t take any credit for the cover. The designers at Cedar Fort are amazing and create incredible covers. I’m very pleased with this cover and hope it piques the interest of potential readers.

4. What book are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a YA paranormal about a young girl who derives her strength and power from her virtue and must use that power to fight demons. I just published an ebook “Hook Me: What to Include in Your First Chapter” on Smashwords. I’m also working on a few more ebooks and outlining a possible series.

5. What is the best advice to give aspiring writers?
The best advice for aspiring authors is to never give up. Also, read, read, read. Write, write, write. Attend conferences, network with other writers, join a critique group, hone your craft. Persistence pays off–I know because I am very persistent.

Thank you so much!! You can read more about Rebecca and her books here at her blog.

I received a review copy from Cedar Fort. In no way did this influence the review given.

Old Friends, New Friends

One of the best parts about the LDStorymakers Conference is meeting up with old friends. Another is making new friends who will be old friends next year. Part 1 of our LDStorymakers Podcast series is a collection of interviews with L.T. Elliot, Karen Hoover, Donald J. Carey, Rebecca Talley, and Heather Justesen. I was so caught up in talking with these wonderful people that I completely forgot I had my camera with me, so the only picture I have of any of them is LDSWBR with Heather. Lesson learned for next year!

Okay, so this was supposed to go up yesterday, but I was working on my book review and didn’t get it up in time. Here is our Teaser Tuesday post for yesterday-

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR lists if they like your teasers!

Shanda’s Teaser:

“The way you’re acting. You seem like you’re in–”

Caitlyn reached over and planted her hand across Brittany’s mouth. “I’ll take my hand away if you promise not to say it.”

Brittany nodded so Caitlyn took her hand away. “Love.” Brittany shouted it and then ran toward the hospital doors.

Altared Plans by Rebecca Cornish Talley, page 96

Sheila’s Teaser:

” ‘Was it possible Monica’s death wasn’t related to anything else that had taken place that week? That the threats were red herrings and Monica was the random victim of a robber or a kid high on drugs? You’re stretching credibility ten feet past the breaking point. You just want to believe that there’s no threat to you-that Monica was the one harassing you and that now that she’s dead, you’re in no danger.’ ”

Methods of Madness by Stephanie Black, page94

Hillary’s Teaser:

You know, Mitch, now that I’m dying, I’ve become much more interesting to people.”

“You were always interesting”

“Ho.” Morrie smiled. “You’re kind.”

I have a
love/hate relationship with book trailers.

I think the concept is great and I’m all for it. By all means, sell me on why I should read your book. Just make sure that if your viewers are laughing, it’s because your book is a comedy.

I’ve seen a number of book trailers, most of which are mainly “okay.” I saw one that was so cheesy there were mice coming from my neighbors’ homes looking for dinner. Tonight I saw one that was just right.

I haven’t read the book yet, so I don’t even know if it’s my “thing” or not. I haven’t personally met the author, but Sheila has, and from what I know about Rebecca Talley from Sheila, I respect her. And I really like her trailer for Altared Plans.

I don’t know how the whole make-a-trailer-for-your-book process goes. Does the author have any say or is it all up to the publisher? In any case, if you’re going to consider a book trailer for your book, please, I BEG YOU, take care.

I don’t mind having a face assigned to the character for me rather than using my imagination. I prefer photos and words in a simple yet classy interaction moving across the screen, but live action scenes are okay, too, if they’re well directed. Beware with dialogue. Keep it brief. Show the interaction between characters, but please don’t try to recreate entire scenes.

I’d really like to read your book, but if all I can see is that campy re-enactment every time I encounter the cover of your book, I’ll never be able to seriously consider it.

23 Days until Christmas!

Rebecca Talley is the author of three novels, including Altared Plans, her most recent release.

Altared Plans is available online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and www.CedarFort.com, as well as Seagull Book and LDS Bookstores.

LDSWBR: Rebecca, tell us, what favorite holiday traditions do you and/or your family participate in every year, and will you be starting any new traditions this year?

REBECCA: The day after Thanksgiving we have the Talley Family Hulapalooza. We set up our tree, decorate it, decorate the house and yard, and then have hot chocolate, popcorn, and watch “Christmas Vacation” (an edited version that’s family friendly). We used to have an accidental family tradition of driving into the garage with the tree on top of the vehicle so it was then wedged between the car and the garage door, but we dispensed with that tradition when we decided to save trees by purchasing an artificial tree (just wish the fake tree smelled as good as the real thing).

We make goodies and go Christmas caroling to our neighbors and friends every year.

We watch “It’s a Wonderful Life” every year and I cry every year when it’s over.

We choose a family to secret Santa each year and we almost always get caught on delivery. We’re just not that sneaky.

Every night in December, until December 24th, we read a scripture, sing a Christmas carol, and then read a Christmas story. On Christmas Eve we read the account in Luke. Our children perform a play for us complete with singing and costumes (a tradition my sister and I started when we were young and performed for our grandparents). We then have a visit from one of Santa’s helpers who dresses just like Santa and delivers Christmas Eve gifts (our kids draw names and then make, or purchase, a gift for that person which we place under a Christmas Eve tree–these are the gifts that Santa delivers in person). After Santa’s visit we read a children’s Christmas picture book to all the kids and then it’s off to bed.

On Christmas morning, the kids wait outside our bedroom door at 5:00 am and whisper so loudly they always wake us up even though we’ve already stated that they weren’t allowed to get up until 6:00 (it’s a tradition because it happens every single year and we, the parents, always lose). We have a big family dinner with my sister’s family (she also has 10 kids) on Christmas day and play the same music our grandpa played all while we were growing up.

LDSWBR: What books are on your Christmas wish list?

REBECCA: The Ball’s in Her Court, The Last Waltz, Eyes Like Mine, English Trifle, The Hourglass Door, An Angel on Main Street, Santa Maybe, Mormon Mishaps, Wings, All the Stars in Heaven, Shudder

LDSWBR: Wow, nice wish list! What books do you plan on purchasing/have you purchased as gifts for loved ones this Christmas? (Unless sharing would ruin the surprise for someone- we wouldn’t want that to happen!)

REBECCA: The Joseph Smith Papers, Mormons and Masons, Charley Bones, Flat Stanley, Eager, and numerous other children’s books that I can’t remember because I’ve already wrapped them.

LDSWBR: Thanks, Rebecca!

Listen to our podcast with Rebecca Talley on www.ldswomensbookreview.com!

I love Rebecca’s “tradition” of driving into the garage with the Christmas tree strapped on top of the car. Do you have a funny Christmas tree story or tradition?
